Kansas City Chiefs...The Greatest Dynasty in Modern Sports?

Achieving success by the most efficient means possible is the name of the game. Andy Reid, Pat Mahomes, and Kansas City win the biggest games.

Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, New England Patriots, Golden State Warriors, New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys. All dynasties, however, none have done it quite like the Kansas City Chiefs. Since becoming the starting quarterback in 2018 Patrick Mahomes has done nothing less than make his franchise a mainstay in the AFC Championship Game with 7 consecutive appearances. A marriage of QB and Head Coach so successful “The Arrowhead Invitational” has become one of the best games every NFL season. Partially because it usually involves Josh Allen trying to capture an ever so elusive playoff victory against his nemesis, to no avail.
All the past dynasties mentioned had star power, but none of them fett like the Kansas City Chiefs. Every season begins with a conversation of who is going to "be” the champ but never who is going to “beat” the champ. Narratives are painted when everybody is 0-0 that KC is “not as strong” because they opted to let certain players go and there is a “chink in the armor”. Even when games are won, they aren’t as dominant, and they don’t look like past Super Bowl Chief teams. All Andy Reid does is boast a 15-2 regular season record and is 2 weeks and 1 more Mahomes playoff win from his chance at a historic 3-peat.

No matter how many touchdowns you score or how many rushing yards you have, the stat that determines success is wins and losses. Kansas City is the most adaptable team in the league, they aren’t rigid, but fluid. They don’t care how they win the game; they just win. Never flustered, always prepared, and always ready to execute in the biggest moments. They're never a dropped pass or bad playcall away, they're always right on time because that’s what championship teams do.
So, what makes them the Greatest Dynasty in modern sports history? In 7 seasons as a starter, Mahomes is 17-3 in the playoffs, appeared in the Super Bowl five times, and won the biggest game three times…All before he hit the age of 30. To put it into perspective Tom Terrific (Brady) won 3 of his 7 Championships, after the age of 37. In addition, Tom Brady won 12 playoff games before age 29. From day one, Pat Mahomes has won football games and done it a lot. As great of a QB and Coach tandem KC football is the ultimate team game, and defense wins championships. Personnel changes from year to year it’s the NFL and the Chiefs stay just as stout under the direction of Steve Spagnoulo, they’ve drafted well on that side of the ball because they’re familiar with what winning ball players look like.
As I close Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the Kansas City Chiefs may not have the mystique of those big-ticket franchise dynasties, but as one of the historic AFL/NFL franchises, it is fitting that they have built such a strong and resilient championship organization. Hank Stram and Lamar Hunt would be proud.
